In the small print in its latest annual report, supermarket giant Tesco has admitted that it is likely that there were a number of instances where the company had breached the Groceries Supply Code of Practice.
The industry watchdog, the Groceries Code Adjudicator had announced in February that it was investigating the way that Tesco treats its suppliers. In particular, there were allegations from suppliers that Tesco had delayed payments and demanded cash in return for prominently positioning their products in stores.
The Groceries Code Adjudicator has power to name and shame companies that do not uphold the code and issue public recommendations. Soon, it will have the power to fine large supermarket chains up to 1% of turnover for mistreating their smaller suppliers.
