Government Names Small Business Commissioner

October 04 2017

Secretary of State for Business, Greg Clark, has announced the appointment of Paul Uppal to the newly-established post of Small Business Commissioner.

A former conservative MP and small business owner Mr Uppal will lead an independent office tasked with empowering small businesses. The government expects the role to support small businesses to resolve disputes with larger businesses and change a business culture of late payment, which disproportionately affects smaller businesses. The office of the Small Business Commissioner is expected to be operational by the end of 2017.

Mr Uppal, the new Small Business Commissioner said:

"Running your own business can be a very lonely experience and my priority will be ensuring small firms feel supported ... successful businesses are built on integrity, entrepreneurial spirit and trusting relationships and I want to highlight that Britain can be the best place in the world for new entrepreneurs to establish and grow their own businesses."

About Paul Uppal:

  • studied politics and sociology at the University of Warwick
  • served as a Tory MP for Wolverhampton South West between May 2010 and March 2015
  • small business owner for more than 20 years
